VIDEO: Disinformation Summit reveals difficulties journalists face during 'democratic backslide'

New York University journalism professor Jay Rosen speaks at the University of Cambridge's “Journalism and Democratic Backsliding” presentation last week as part of its Disinformation Summit.

How should journalists responsibly engage political actors during an era of democratic backsliding?

That question was the basis for a conversation last week at the Cambridge Disinformation Summit featuring New York University journalism professor Jay Rosen; Cardiff University journalism professor Richard Sambrook, who is the former Director of BBC World News; and University of Cambridge Gates Scholar researcher and former reporter for Haaretz, Ayala Panievsky.

Rosen discussed “verification in reverse,” describing it as a disruptive tactic that upends facts previously verified through rigorous journalistic processes. “...the doubt creates energy and commotion and conflict and rage and emotion. And with that energy released by denial of verified fact, you can power a political movement,” he says.
